Commercial fishing for salmon
Text Ola Hobbelstad
"I know the conditions best after the last world war when I started working as a crew member on the East Side. I'll tell you a little about it":
The river was rich in fish and after the development in Hellefoss made it more difficult for the salmon to come up, the big fishing was down here. Fishing was done with drift nets at higher and average water levels and with "VAD" when the river was calmer. Net fishing required two men in each boat, the fishing base and one to row in one and cast, plus one to hold the rope in the other. Some used a large log instead of a boat at the other end. The net was spread out and laid neatly on the bottom of the boat, upper bunk and lower bunk separately. When the base had assessed the current and the currents in the river, the boat with the base quickly rowed across the river and he threw the net so that it stood up and down in the river between the boats.
Fishing took place from Monday at 6:00 PM to Friday at 6:00 PM. On weekends, salmon were protected. We usually started fishing at 6:00 PM every evening and continued until 2-3 AM. Monday was usually the best fishing day. Then the salmon had gathered above the waterfall during the weekend and in the evening they sank to the bottom.
